iPhone SE (2020) Is Now Being Assembled in India

Apple has now started manufacturing the latest and the most affordable iPhone in India. Apple’s contract manufacturer Wistron, has started the manufacturing process in Karnataka. Apple already assembles the iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and even surprisingly the outdated iPhone 7 in India. This move will allow Apple to save 20% in taxes which would otherwise be levied if imported in the country. In a few days, the smartphone will hit the market with “Made in India” tag. It is also expected that the price of iPhone SE 2020 will be lowered.

The iPhone SE 2020 is powered by Apple’s A13 Bionic chip which is the same processor which is used in the iPhone 11 series. It starts in India at Rs. 42,500 for the base 64GB variant. The affordable price of iPhone SE will be tempting to consumers since it comes with the flagship processor. Apple has always been good at providing software updates to its older generation phones. iOS 14 was announced on 22 June, 2020 at WWDC 2020. iOS 14 even supports older iPhones like iPhone 6 and 6 Plus which were launched way back in late 2014. Considering Apple’s track record, the iPhone SE 2020 is going to be supported for a long time.

The iPhone SE 2020 features a 4.70 inch Retina HD display with 7MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera. It supports upto 4K 60 FPS video recording using the rear camera. It comes with Touch ID and is rated IP67 water and dust resistant. It also features wireless charging. It comes with iOS 13 and supports 18W fast charging.

Considering the current market situation in India, iPhone SE competes with the OnePlus Nord. Earlier this month, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad revealed that Apple’s contract manufacturers Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron had applied for a $6.64 billion (roughly Rs. 49,242 crores) scheme under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) plan. Apple has a mere 2% market share in India’s smartphone market. A major reason for this is the high prices of iPhones in India. For the past years Apple has been importing iPhones from China and selling it in India. Due to this, Apple has been unable to setup Apple Stores because foreign retailers are required to source atleast 30% of the raw materials locally as per the Indian regulations. The Cupertino giant is planning to increase its market share in India using the cheaper iPhone SE.
